Did you know that there are approximately 21 million military veterans in the USA? Now just to put that into perspective, that’s about 8% of the American population.
While that may seem like a pretty low ratio, I think it’s safe to say that most everyone knows someone who is serving or has served in the military. And if we don’t know someone personally, we’ve seen clips upon clips of military wives, military children and military parents. We’ve seen the happy homecoming videos, the heart-wrenching goodbyes and the beautiful songs dedicated to those that give their lives to our country.
For all of us civilians – we may not know exactly what it’s like to be serving for our country, but we know it’s hard. We can’t imagine what it’s like to fight on the front lines – to hear terrifying blasts, to miss our loved ones and wonder if we’ll see them again. We don’t know and we can never know what it’s like.
And we don’t have to know because there are those that absorb that for us. There are men and women who literally take the shot for us, so that we can go to sleep at night in the Land of the Free.
