At the beginning of this month, July 2016, OSHA has cited Lakemoor Dental with 11 serious violations and 4 other-than-serious violations.
OSHA initiated their inspections in April 2016 after an employee filed a complaint about bloodborne pathogen exposure standards. After the investigation, OSHA found that in both locations the employer did not establish bloodborne pathogen exposure control plans and hazard communication programs.
Specifically, the dental company failed to provide and require gloves and personal protective equipment of the staff. Medical evaluations for employees were also not provided. Lakemoor Dental also failed to provide a Hepatitis B vaccine to employees or chemical and pathogen hazard training.
They received a total fine from OSHA of $53,900. Broken up, it was $29,400 for the Hainesville, IL location and $24,500 for the Lakemoor, IL location of the practice.
OSHA stated “Dental offices like Lakemoor have a responsibility to ensure patients and staff are protected from injury and illness during procedures.” They also remind workers that they can file complaints at their local office if they feel their rights are being abridged.
Remember to be safe at work. In the healthcare industry, wear gloves, respirators and stay in the know of laws and hazards related to your work.
