Man Dies From 24 Foot Fall in NJ Warehouse

While working for a frozen food distributor plant in Jersey City, NJ, a 60-year-old employee fell to his death from a top of warehouse rack, 24 feet off the ground.

The OSHA citation for this incident was issued on June 22, 2016. Apparently the food distribution plant, Wei-Chuan U.S.A, failed to provide fall protection for their employees.  Wei-Chuan U.S.A. also failed to provide accurate and ample forklift training.  The food distribution company has also violated Safety Data Sheet requirements, proper hand protection and more. Not surprisingly, Wei-Chuan U.S.A, faces a total of 8 hefty violations.

The proposed penalty for these violations is $107K.

It’s frightening to think that the proper fall protection would have prevented this fatality. OSHA’s Brain Flynn says that “This tragedy could have been prevented if the company used basic safeguards and properly trained its employees to recognize workplace hazards”.

Be safe at work! Wear those harnesses and self-retracting lifelines. Before using a forklift, train to use it properly. Keep your Safety Data Sheets accessible and up to date.

If this is not a reminder, not sure what is…
