Christmas Lights Care & Caution

You can feel it in the air, can’t you? Lights, ugly sweaters and of course, gifts! The Christmas festivities have officially begun.

As I’m sure all of you are – we at Gorvex.com are excited to be putting up our Christmas decorations.  But, like everything we do, we try to do it safely.  And because more than 86% of American families decorate their homes during the holiday season, we’d thought we’d share some of our knowledge with you.

To minimize the risk of fire and electrical dangers, make sure to keep the following in mind when you decorate for Christmas:

  • Only purchase lights that have been safety tested. Look out for a label on the package from a testing laboratory.
  • Before hanging the lights, be sure to check if there are tears, cuts or fray wires anywhere. Do not use any lights if they appear damaged.
  • If you use an extension cord, make sure that it can reach as far as you need it to. Never try to extend an extension cord with another extension cord.
  • Do not connect more than three incandescent lights together on an extension cord.
  • Use extension cords that are intact and be careful about damaging the cord’s insulation. If broken, it can cause a fire.
  • Unplug decorations before changing bulbs.
  • If you have a fireplace – place the tree at least a few feet away to minimize the risk of the tree catching fire.
  • Turn off all lights before you go to sleep or leave the house.

Happy Decorating!
